The HomeAgain microchip scam force pets lovers into a membership.
Some pet owners realize that they have choices and when they make the choice not to use HomeAgain the company engages in retaliatory practices that could ultimately result in the death of your pet if he or she is lost.
This section provides information on the HomeAgain “memberships” and in the next section, there are links to pet microchip registries that you can register your pet with instead of HomeAgain.
Visitors to the HomeAgain website are forced into an annual membership to register their pets microchip.
Currently the annual membership fee is $17.99.
The website has a snarky salesperson type of feel to it.
They prefer to be contacted by telephone, presumably to subject you to a high pressure conversation with a salesperson in order to suck you in to the HomeAgain microchip scam.
According to HomeAgain,
Following the first year of HomeAgain membership (which is regularly priced at $17.99 but may be offered at a discount through a HomeAgain vet clinic or shelter), pet owners will be able to maintain their exclusive member benefits by renewing their annual membership at a nominal cost of $17.99 per year.
Consumers are very confused about all of this and are more confused if they use the blue form supplied by HomeAgain via the pet shelter.
Some consumers don’t want a membership. They simply want to register their pets microchip. And they are more than willing to pay for the registration.
The HomeAgain website leads you to believe that if you do not renew your membership that your pet is not protected, which is completely untrue and is part of the overall scam.
More on that later.
Registering a HomeAgain microchip with a different company
HomeAgain wants you to register with them.
Remember, they make their money by the annual fee they charge consumers.
It is obviously a very profitable business for them. So profitable that they can afford to provide free supplies and incentives to pet shelters and veterinarians.
That is the heart of how the HomeAgain microchip scam works.
In their business marketing literature, they let businesses know that even if consumers do not renew their membership, their pet will remain registered in the Home Again database forever, which is a key point as to why so many shelters partner with them.
To them, it seems like a win-win situation. Shelters and vets get free supplies and perhaps even cash incentives and HomeAgain makes millions.
They may even think they are making a difference in the world by ensuring that all pets taken in at the facility are microchipped.
Or, they may be receiving cash incentives for the participation.
In either scenario, it is certainly a loss to the consumer and the effects of the HomeAgain pet microchip scam are very far reaching.
All costs are passed along to the consumer.
What the shelters may or may not realize is what happens on the back end at HomeAgain.
Should you decide not to register with HomeAgain, they will employ extremely questionable and unethical practices.
Think about this next statement.
The shelter that you adopted your pet from, or the veterinarian that implanted the microchip has all of the information right there at their fingertips. They have your name, your pets name and your contact information and can easily enter the information into the database right then and there.
The microchips are all numbered and tracked so it is a very simple task.
HomeAgain supplies the numbered microchips and they know exactly which shelter or veterinarian implanted the microchip.
The process would take only a minute or two.
Instead, the consumer is told to register the microchip at home so that HomeAgain can sell a membership. Both vets and shelters will warn you that your pet is not registered until you officially register with Home Again.
Another statement that is simply not true.
The microchip is already registered to HomeAgain and they use that registration to harass consumers who choose not to use their service.
Even worse, is that their actions can prevent you from being reunited with your lost pet and can even result in your beloved pet being put to sleep.
